| | | Jackie Robinson is one of my favorite teachers. She works from the student’s point of view so you see exactly how you should be doing the things she shows. The first thing I do is print the PDF file of the Weaver Fever pattern so I can make any notes as the DVD plays. Jackie begins with fabric selection and moves straight into cutting. Her method of cutting strips is unique. She teaches a “backwards cutting” technique that I must try. She straightens the edge; then turns the cutting board and cuts a section that is divisible by the size of the strip sets she needs. For example, if she needs 2 ½” sets, she cuts a 10” deep piece. Then without moving the material, she cuts on the 7 ½” mark and without moving the fabric but just sliding the ruler, she cuts again on the 5” mark, etc. When done, she can pick up the pieces and cut another section if needed. This keeps her edges very straight and always leaves her remaining material with a straight edge. In Weaver Fever, she shows a way to keep the strip sets very straight. In sewing long strips, the feed dogs tend to stretch the bottom fabric. By sewing from one end and then the other, this is prevented. Watch the DVD for in-depth details on this technique. Jackie also has another unique way of putting a quilt top together. She calls it the “2’sy-4’sy method. Once you have it laid out, sew two blocks together, and then sew another two blocks together in the same row. Now sew this rectangle block to matching rectangle blocks in the row below. When done with this, sew the 4 blocks to another 4 blocks, etc. You are sewing blocks into a rectangle into a block into a rectangle into a block. Very cool. Miter corners --- we all love them but they are such a pain. Not when you use Jackie’s method for them. After sewing the borders (be sure to allow the width of the borders plus a couple of inches just in case), lay the quilt out. Place one border out flat and lay the other border across. Find the corner of the quilt. Fold the top strip diagonally so the edge matches the side of the bottom border. PRESS! Fold the quilt at a diagonal so you can sew in the fold. Presto! Perfect miters. I did find that one page of the PDF was missing. There is a special blocks page for the 5-ver version and that was not included in the file. I LOVE the outtakes that show we are all nervous when talking in front of others. To me, it shows that we are all human and make mistakes and love to kid around. The Quilter’s Schoolhouse DVD Series is wonderful. The teachers are very helpful and the ability to see the process of creating the quilt is extremely helpful.
