Anti Virus
Before scanning for malicious software like viruses, Trojans and keystroke loggers, check the version date. If the software is not up to date, update it before scanning. Update the malicious software scanner or antivirus. If the computer seems unable to update the software, the computer is likely infected.
Run the quick scan of the malicious software or antivirus scan. Watch your computer while it goes through a quick scan for malicious software. Is it scanning dll files? Is it scanning key software folders, such as “documents and settings”? If it is not, the scanner may be compromised by viruses or Trojans that shield themselves by instructing malicious software scanners and antivirus software to not scan their locations. If these key software types or locations are not scanned, then the computer may be infected.
Are there strange folder or software names in the antivirus scanning list? Folder names liked surf sidekick, msn sniffer and spykey should be warnings. Not all of these tools are malicious software, since they may have been installed by a family member or manager. However, if you have no knowledge of these tools or there is no one else who reasonably would have installed these software packages to backup information on the computer, suspect an infection.
Then scan the whole computer. If the software still refuses to scan these file locations or file types, the odds of infection are very high. Install a new malicious software scanning and removal tool, and then use it.
If these methods did not identify and remove the malicious software that is likely on the computer, you may need professional technical support to remove it.
